Authorities in Ghana are investigating a fish mortality incident at the Tema Shipyard, first reported on 6th April 2026.

The Food and Drugs Authority (FDA), Fisheries Commission, Tema Metropolitan Assembly (TMA), and the Criminal Investigations Department (CID) of the Ghana Police Service moved quickly to secure the site and launch a coordinated response.

Dead fish were concentrated within a 50-metre radius of the main unloading ramp, first noticed by security personnel between 5:00 AM and 6:00 AM.

A rapid-response team comprising FDA inspectors, police officers, and Tema Port officials has since been working to determine the cause of the incident. Preliminary findings indicate no evidence of deliberate sabotage or an immediate widespread health emergency.

Between 60 and 80 fish samples, along with water samples, have been collected under strict chain-of-custody protocols and are being prioritised for laboratory testing.

The agencies have warned the public not to harvest, purchase, or consume fish or seafood from the shipyard or surrounding areas until an official “All-Clear” notice is issued.

They emphasised that fish from certified cold-chain markets outside the affected zone remain safe for consumption if cooked to an internal temperature of 63°C or above.

Citizens who notice dead or distressed fish are urged to report the sightings to the FDA hotline at 0551 112 224/5 or visit the nearest FDA office.

Anyone who has consumed fish from the area and experiences nausea, vomiting, diarrhoea, dizziness, or skin irritation should seek immediate medical attention and inform healthcare providers of possible exposure.

The incident has raised concerns over environmental safety and fish quality at one of Ghana’s busiest port facilities.

Authorities continue to monitor the situation closely and have pledged to provide updates as soon as the investigation progresses.
