UK Hails Ghana’s Free Primary Health Care Launch as Bold Step Toward Universal Coverage

The United Kingdom has congratulated the Government of Ghana on the launch of the Free Primary Health Care Policy, describing it as a bold step towards Universal Health Coverage and stronger preventive care for all Ghanaians.

The congratulatory message, issued by the UK High Commission in Ghana through its official X handle, also reaffirmed London’s long-standing role in supporting Ghana’s primary health care journey.

A Partnership Rooted in History

The UK High Commission noted that primary health care is the most cost-effective and equitable pathway to Universal Health Coverage — and that the United Kingdom has been proud to support Ghana’s PHC journey over the years.

That support, the statement made clear, has spanned key pillars of Ghana’s health system, including the Community Health and Planning Services (CHPS) and the National Health Insurance Scheme (NHIS).

Significantly, the UK also worked in partnership with Ghana on the development of the Free Primary Health Care Policy itself.
Accra Reset in Practical Reality
The High Commission framed the launch in broader terms, stating that with Free Primary Health Care, Ghana is bringing the Accra Reset and health sovereignty into practical reality — through nationally led and sustainably financed health systems.

The statement positions the policy not merely as a health intervention, but as a concrete expression of Ghana’s commitment to owning and financing its development agenda on its own terms.
