The Ghana Gold Board (GoldBod) has partnered with the Ghana Armed Forces and the Forestry Commission to launch a major land reclamation initiative aimed at restoring degraded forest reserves impacted by mining activities.

The project will begin with the rehabilitation of 50 hectares within the Tano Nimiri Forest Reserve, marking what officials describe as a significant step towards environmental restoration and sustainable natural resource management.

The partnership was formalised at a signing ceremony attended by officials from the three institutions, who underscored the need for coordinated action to address land degradation and protect Ghana’s forest ecosystems.

Chief Executive Officer of GoldBod, Sammy Gyamfi, said the initiative forms part of the institution’s broader commitment to environmental stewardship under its Environmental, Social and Governance (ESG) framework and Corporate Social Responsibility (CSR) agenda.

According to him, responsible mining must go beyond revenue generation and include deliberate efforts to restore degraded lands and preserve the environment for future generations.

Deputy Minister for Defence, Ernest Brogya Genfi, highlighted the role of the Ghana Armed Forces in supporting national efforts to reclaim lands damaged by illegal and unsustainable mining activities.

He stressed the importance of collaborative action in safeguarding the country’s natural resources and ensuring environmental sustainability.

Forestry Commission Chief Executive Officer, Dr Hugh Brown, also emphasised the urgency of restoring degraded forest landscapes, noting that forest reserves remain critical to biodiversity conservation, climate resilience and the livelihoods of surrounding communities.

The initiative is expected to contribute to broader national efforts to rehabilitate degraded ecosystems while promoting responsible mining practices and environmental sustainability.
