Government has stepped up humanitarian support for victims of recent floods, with the Minister for Gender, Children and Social Protection, Agnes Naa Momo Lartey, spearheading the distribution of relief items as part of a coordinated national emergency response effort.

The intervention forms part of ongoing operations led by the National Emergency Response Committee, which has been working alongside the National Disaster Management Organisation (NADMO) and other state agencies to provide immediate assistance to affected communities.

As part of the exercise, the Minister joined officials at the NADMO warehouse, where relief supplies were handed over to Metropolitan, Municipal and District Assemblies (MMDAs) for onward distribution to flood-hit areas.

The Gender Minister, who is also a member of the presidential committee overseeing relief operations, assured affected persons that government remains fully committed to supporting all victims until recovery is achieved.

She said the intervention is designed not only to address immediate needs but also to form part of a broader recovery strategy aimed at reducing the long-term impact of flooding on vulnerable households.

The relief package includes essential supplies such as bags of rice, mattresses, blankets, cooking oil and toiletries. Priority, according to the Ministry, is being given to vulnerable groups including children, older persons, pregnant women and persons with disabilities.

Officials also indicated that arrangements are being made to support families who lost relatives during the floods, while continuous assessments are being carried out to identify emerging needs in affected communities.

Beyond emergency relief, the Minister explained that government will integrate affected households into existing social protection programmes, particularly the Livelihood Empowerment Against Poverty (LEAP) scheme, to help cushion long-term recovery and resilience.

She noted that the Ministry will collaborate closely with relevant agencies to assess households and determine the appropriate level of support under established social protection systems.

In addition to the government-led distribution, the Minister also made a personal donation of relief items to the Ga East Municipal Assembly to complement ongoing support efforts in the area.

The items—presented on her behalf by the Director of the Social Protection Directorate at the Ministry, Madam Francisca Atuluk—included toiletries, washing powder, sanitary pads, disinfectants and other household essentials intended to support families affected within the municipality.

Receiving the items, the Member of Parliament for Ga East, Faustina Elikplim Akurugu, expressed appreciation to the Ministry, describing the gesture as timely and supportive of vulnerable residents. She assured that the items would be distributed fairly to those most in need.

The Gender Minister reaffirmed government’s commitment to sustaining support beyond the emergency phase, stressing that social protection systems such as LEAP remain central to helping affected households rebuild their lives.

She further assured that the Ministry will continue to work with NADMO, MMDAs and other stakeholders to ensure that no affected person is left behind in the recovery process.
