Safety Tips

ONIM is a classifieds platform. All transactions happen directly between buyers and sellers. Please read these safety tips before meeting anyone or making a payment.

For Buyers

  • If it's too good to be true, it probably is. Extremely low prices on high-value items are a common scam tactic.
  • Never pay before seeing the item. Inspect the product in person before handing over money.
  • Verify the seller. Check their profile, ratings, and how long they've been on the platform.
  • Use the in-app messaging. Keep all communication on ONIM so there's a record of your conversation.
  • Don't share personal financial details. Never give out your bank PIN, mobile money PIN, or other sensitive information.
  • Ask for proof of ownership. For electronics, vehicles, or other high-value items, ask for receipts or documentation.
  • Be wary of pressure tactics. If a seller is rushing you to pay or won't let you inspect the item, walk away.

For Sellers

  • Verify the buyer's interest. Be cautious of buyers who want to pay more than the asking price or use unusual payment methods.
  • Confirm payment before handing over goods. For mobile money, wait for the confirmation SMS. For cash, count carefully.
  • Don't ship before payment. Never send items to a buyer who promises to pay upon delivery unless you're using a trusted delivery service.
  • Keep records. Screenshot your ONIM conversations and payment confirmations.
  • Protect your personal information. Use the in-app messaging — don't share your home address or personal phone number with strangers.

Meeting in Person

Women should never travel alone to meet sellers or buyers.

Always bring a friend or family member when meeting someone from the internet, regardless of how trustworthy they seem.

  • Meet in a public place. Choose a busy location like a mall, police station, or bank during business hours.
  • Meet during daytime. Never agree to meet at night or in isolated areas.
  • Tell someone where you're going. Share the meeting details (time, location, person's name/username) with a friend or family member.
  • Bring a friend. If possible, don't go alone. There is safety in numbers.
  • Trust your instincts. If something feels wrong, leave immediately. No deal is worth your safety.
  • Verify the item on the spot. Test electronics, check for damage, and make sure the item matches the listing description.
  • Don't carry large amounts of cash. Use mobile money when possible, or bring only the exact amount needed.

Red Flags

Watch out for these warning signs:

  • Seller refuses to meet in person or show the item before payment
  • Price is significantly below market value with no clear reason
  • Seller asks you to pay via gift cards, crypto, or wire transfer
  • Seller asks for your financial details (PINs, passwords, OTPs)
  • Listing uses stock photos instead of real photos of the actual item
  • Seller pressures you to complete the deal urgently
  • Seller asks you to communicate outside the ONIM platform
  • Seller or buyer has a brand new account with no history

What to Do If Something Goes Wrong

  • Report the listing or user. Use the "Report" button on any listing or profile page. Our moderation team reviews all reports.
  • Contact local authorities. If you have been scammed or threatened, file a report with your local police.
  • Preserve evidence. Save screenshots of messages, payment receipts, and the listing details.
  • Don't engage further. If you suspect a scam, stop communicating with the person immediately.
